My home town of Rosthern, SK still has two elevators standing. Again, I don't believe I have any snowy photos of these familiar elevators. Taken on March 25, 2023.

 I was able to get to the Langham elevator at sunrise on March 26, 2023. It was a first for me as it was in winter and at sunrise.

 I hadn't been back to Saskatchewan for quite a while, so while there in March 2023 I took advantage of my time there to get some photos of grain elevators. Although I've posted photos of these elevators before, they weren't taken while there was snow around. This one is the Hepburn elevator which has been preserved as a Wheat Museum.

 In January of this year, 2022, I was approached by the Watrous Manitou Beach Heritage Centre and asked if they could get a print of a Watrous grain elevator to post in their building. I agreed to do so.  This was the result. It's an elevator on an elevator. Very clever, I think.

I was also asked if they could archive and store my Saskatchewan grain elevator negatives and digital photos that I've collected. I agree to do so. 

I'm grateful that the Watrous Heritage Centre, Watrous, Saskatchewan, was and is willing to take care of these negatives and photos. 

If you're travelling in Saskatchewan and it's not too far out of the way, I'd encourage you to stop in at their centre and have a look.

My List of Saskatchewan Grain Elevators Photos

I've just updated the list as of February, 2022.

I decided to update the list of Saskatchewan grain elevator locations that I have photos from over the past 20 years or so. Some places have or had more than one location for elevators like Biggar, Saskatoon, Yorkton, just to name a few. I have photos of all of these elevators in this blog. (If you happen to note that I'm missing any, please let me know.)

It's been an interesting project taking these photos. Even now, whenever we revisit Saskatchewan and I see an elevator coming up in the distance I want to stop and take its photo. It's my way of commemorating Saskatchewan's rural past. The cement monstrosities that are replacing them are not nearly as attractive and will never solicit the same memories, I'm sure. Different times, different memories. 

Sandhill Cranes at Pense, SK

We were driving by Pense on our recent trip to Saskatchewan when I decided to stop and retake a photo of the grain elevator. As I was composing my shot, I heard a familiar sound--the distinct song of Sandhill Cranes. As a kid on the farm, hearing these rare birds was always a special treat. I couldn't believe our luck. I took a few photos of the elevator. The one I'm posting here only includes the top of the elevator so that I can show the flock a little closer up. I'm adding one of just the flock, as well, as it passed by high overhead. And, as we were taking photos of the cranes, another flock of birds was passing by--pelicans--a larger flock than I'd ever seen before. If you look at the photo closely you'll see that the pelicans are overlapping the departing cranes. What a sight!

Kyle, Saskatchewan

We just returned from Saskatchewan. While we were there, part of our trip included driving from Swift Current to Rosetown and on to Saskatoon. For some reason, we did not have a photo of Kyle, which is located on Highway 4, about 70 kms north of Swift Current. I was taking a photo of the elevator when I glanced to the harvested field to my left and couldn't believe my eyes! A herd of Pronghorn Antelope were mostly lying in the stubble field and chewing their cud. (If you squint your eyes you can see them to the left in the elevator.) I counted about 20 of them. It's the first time we'd seen that many together in our lives. The elevator was a great find, but the antelope were special. If my count is correct, Kyle is the 121st photo I've taken of of their grain elevator in a village, town, or city in Saskatchewan.

Langham Elevator ten years later

I posted a photo of the Langham elevator just about 10 years ago on this blog. On September 12, 2016 I drove out to Langham from Saskatoon to take a new photo. Not much has changed. Sometimes that's good. Sometimes it's not. In this case it's good to see this icon still standing.

Memories of grain elevators

Sometimes memories of grain elevators go beyond simply delivering grain. In 1962, I was unloading a truckload of wheat at this former UGG elevator in Rosthern when I received a phone call from my father telling me that my mother had just delivered a set of twin boys. It was a surprise to everyone, including the doctors, that she had twins. I still associate this elevator with that phone call. I took this "updated" photo on August 19, 2015. (If only I'd taken a photo in 1962.)

In Rosthern again

I delivered grain to Rosthern when I was at home on the farm. I was "home" for a visit and just had to take another grain elevator photo. I took this one from a spot that I may have found before. I liked how the train cars formed a line next to the elevator. I guess I don't tire of these photos even though I've taken hundreds of them by now. It was a cloudy day which I prefer as it gives the sky some detail and appeal. The Pool sign has been painted over and is likely being managed by a private company.

Memories

One of the reasons I have collected photos of Saskatchewan grain elevators is because I used to haul grain to this very elevator when I was a teenager. Grain elevators were part of my life experience and became a part of my memory for ever. For many prairie folks elevators hold a special place near to their heart as farmers made up the majority of the province for the first years until cities grew in size often due to the fact that the small farmers could no longer afford to support themselves and had to sell to their wealthier neighbors. Many of the new city residents were farmers.

I've added some effects to this photo to make it appear like it's an old photo. Considering that I was a teenager so many years ago I think it's fitting.

Memories

When we used to sell cards and framed photos of Saskatchewan grain elevators at craft shows in Saskatoon, we'd hear many a story about parents or grandparents who had worked in elevators as agents and of those who delivered grain by horse and wagon way back when. They always came across as fond memories but also with some sadness at the thought of losing these prairie icons. With every wooden grain elevator that is torn down, memories go down with them. A physical reminder is far more powerful than an empty space beside the old railway tracks.
May this holiday season bring each of you fond memories of times past that we can build on for future generations.

Another look at White Bear, SK

I thought I'd "paint" the falling icon and give it a look for posterity.

Bladworth impastoed

One of the "paints" that can be applied via software to photos is called impasto. I had to look it up. The link to trusty wikipedia is here. It's essentially a heavy pasting of paints creating a texture that reflects light and can give almost a 3D appearance. I applied it to a Bladworth elevator photo I took this August. I quite like the results.

Pense painted

I "painted" Pense like this using software and liked the effect of the red sky. It could be fire. Some wooden grain elevators burned down when grain got too hot because it wasn't dry enough to store. But many more were burned down intentionally when the grain companies made the decision to get rid of the town elevators. Perhaps this photo symbolizes the demise of the prairie grain elevators.
